Installing Rail Vinyl
| The adhesive doesn't need to dry long (a couple of minutes)
before you can start on the vinyl. I used Whisper Vinyl from
JoAnn's. I believe it is 54" w, and I purchased 3 yds. Lay the vinyl on the floor upside down. Place the rail on top of the vinyl (also upside down). Make sure it's centered. Start your stapling at the end of the arc (on the outside). Stretch the vinyl around the end and pull it tight. Start by placing two staples (on the bottom/outer ring of the rail) to hold the vinyl in place. Then work your way around the arc one direction at a time. The key here is to pull the vinyl very tight, and pull the slack "inward" towards the staples you've already made. Don't worry about wrinkles on the bottom of the rail (that's where you want them to be). The more careful you are with this part, the easier the inside of the rail will be. |
|
| You can see how many staples you'll need to use. Thank God
for electric staplers. Remember, as you're pulling the vinyl, pull it in the direction of your previous staples (ie to the inside). |
|
| Another view of the arc. As you can see, all the wrinkles are on the bottom, or at the edge of the bottom (where no one will see them). As you go along, reach your hand around the top/sides of the rail to make sure there aren't any wrinkle. Take it slow because you want it to look nice. | |
| I've just completed stapling the outside of the rail. Here you can see that I've used only one piece of vinyl (key if you don't want any seams). | |

| Go ahead and use your razor to cut out a square from the middle. Leave yourself at least 4" of vinyl on the inside. Also, the square should only be cut on the straight portion of the table. We'll get to the arcs next. | |
| Stapling the arc is actually pretty easy (if you've done the
outer portion well). From reading the various websites, I thought I'd
never be able to do it. Refer to www.pcpotato.com for detailed (and
very helpful) instructions on the arc. Here just use the razor to cut a series of triangles (starting from the same center point (roughly where your tacknail/axis was earlier). The triangles should get wider as you get closer to the rail. BE CAREFUL not to make your cuts to close to the rail. You want the vinyl to be able to wrap underneath the rail without any of the cut being exposed. PCPOTATO suggests 3", but out of an abundance of caution I went with 4", and then just made additional cuts as necessary. Take this part slow. Start with the end of the arc, and just pull the vinyl tight and staple it (a helper here is crucial). Work your way around the arcs pulling it tight and stapling it down. Remember that your foam is in there, and you might need to tug it a little before pulling the vinyl to ensure that the foam wraps properly around the rail. |
|
| Do the arcs first, and then get to the middle sections (which are very easy and quick). Once you have it stapled down, you can trim off the excess vinyl. | |
